What is Jojoba and where does it come from?
Jojoba oil is a plant-based oil that can be found in the nut of the Jojoba plant. The oil produced by the seed makes up for approximately 50% of the jojoba seed in weight! This plant is native to Southern Arizona, California, and Northwestern Mexico.
How is it made?
Jojoba oil is made using an extraction process. One must first find the plant and cultivate it. Once the plant is cultivated, the seeds must be dried and pressed. After this process, the meal (the usually coarsely ground and unbolted seeds of a cereal grass or pulse) and wax of the seeds are thrown away and the oil is then extracted from the seed.
What does it do and what are the benefits?
Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties which helps decrease the likeliness of chafing and chapping, redness (caused by dryness), and rosacea as well as keeping the skin calm and comfortable. This oil contains Vitamin E and B complex which contributes to damage control during use as well as skin repair. The Vitamin E provided through the Jojoba Oil works hand in hand with your skin as an antioxidant (a substance that inhibits oxidation, especially one used to counteract the deterioration of stored food products). Because of this, Jojoba oil plays a beneficial role in helping your skin fight off oxidative stress generally caused by everyday exposure to pollutants and toxins. In addition, Jojoba oil is a natural moisturizer found in nature that provides excellent moisture for those who have eczema. Jojoba has several additional benefits that are as follows:
1. It provides excellent moisture!
Using Jojoba oil helps to seal and provide an extra layer of protection for the skin which decreases the likelihood of losing moisture. This oil can also prevent bacterial infections, acne, and dandruff from forming.
2. Helps fight off bacteria
. Jojoba oil has antimicrobial and antifungal properties meaning its use can help fight off several bacterias. Although Jojoba oil is antibacterial, it does not kill ALL bacteria. Common types of bacteria this oil kills are such funguses that cause salmonella, E.Coli infections, and candida.
3. Doesn’t clog your pores!
Jojoba oil is made up of similar oils in comparison to the ones that your body produces naturally. It is a botanical substance and is also considered to be a non-comedogenic substance. This means using this oil will NOT clog your pores and will lead to less breakouts over time as well as decrease the severity of acne outbreaks.
4. Won’t cause an allergic reaction!
Jojoba oil is non-irritating and allergic reactions to this oil are very rare. When looking at jojoba oil on a molecular level, it is wax! This wax oil is absorbed into the skin upon use which allows for the creation of a soothing seal on the surface of the skin.
5. Controls sebum production.
Jojoba oil is a great way to regulate your sebum (an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands) production. This is one of the most effective substances to use due to its extreme similarity to the oils your body produces naturally.
6. Deeply Hydrates Skin.
In comparison to other face oils, Jojoba oil is very light while also being very easy to absorb into the skin. It penetrates, soothes and softens resulting in an excellent moisturizing effect with a healthy looking glow!
7. Long lasting moisture.
Most water based moisturizers have the tendency to evaporate after an extended period of time, but jojoba doesn’t! You can expect to stay moisturized for long periods of time while using this oil! It has been scientifically proven that Jojoba has a substantial long-acting layer of moisture which elongates the amount of time before the oil must be reapplied.
8. Provides nutrition for the skin.
As previously mentioned, Jojoba Oil contains Vitamin E, Vitamin B complex and antioxidants, all of which are very nutritious for the skin. In addition to these vitamins, Jojoba oil also contains minerals like chromium, copper, and zinc which all act to nourish and protect the skin.
9. Age no more!
Jojoba oil is considered to most as a perfect moisturizer and with this, slows the appearance of aging as well as help to fade lines and wrinkles. Dermatological testing has shown that jojoba oil increases the skin’s suppleness and this observation was still visible after long periods of time.
10. No grease!
Unlike many oils, Jojoba is not greasy! It is very similar to the oils our skin provides on its own and because of this, it immediately penetrates the skin and smoothes easily. This allows for the promotion of healthy, glowing skin without clogging pores or leaving a greasy residue.
11. Soothes sunburn!
If you ever get sunburn, using Jojoba oil soothes sunburn as well as reduces the chances of peeling.
How do you use jojoba oil?
It is recommended upon one’s first use to conduct a patch test. A patch test is the use of a product on a little spot on your skin to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction. In order to conduct a patch test, one must do the following:
1. Apply three to four drops of jojoba oil to the inner forearm area.
2. Cover the applied area with a bandage and wait about 24 hours.
3. Remove the bandage after 24 hours and check the skin underneath to ensure that there is no reaction.
– Signs of reaction consist of hives, redness, and irritation.
– If there is no reaction, feel free to use it as recommended.
– If there is a reaction, avoid use.
What are the side effects and possible risks of jojoba oil?
Like with any type of cream or medication, there may be potential side effects and maybe even risks. Since Jojoba oil is a hypoallergenic substance, it is generally considered safe to apply topically. In very few occurrences, jojoba oil has caused reactions such as hives and constant itching.
